The importance of genetic disorders in clinical practice cannot be underestimated. About 60% of pregnancy losses, 2-3 % of all neonates and 30% of disorders seen in day to day practice have some genetic component as a causative/aggravating pathology. It is more advantageous to prevent occurrence of a genetic disorder, diagnose and treat it at pre clinical stage than to wait for the birth of a baby with serious genetic disorder. Unfortunately, there is very little awareness about the importance of genetic and congenital disorders in health care at all levels. There are lots of myths, misconceptions about this in the general population as well. Realizing the importance and need of genetic services in our area of Western suburbs we have added Prenatal Diagnostic Procedures (Amniocentesis, Chorion Villous Sampling-CVS, Cord blood sampling, Foetal reductions in multiple pregnancy) and Genetic Counselling services (PNDT Registration N0: 57). |
